Nixon is partly right
#1
From newly published Nixon tapes (Dec. 14, 1972):
NIXON: And also, never forget, the press is the enemy.
KISSINGER: On that, there's no question --
NIXON: The press is the enemy. The press is the enemy. The establishment is the enemy. The professors are the enemy. Professors are the enemy. Write that on the blackboard a hundred times and never forget it.
KISSINGER: I, on the professors --
NIXON: Always --
KISSINGER: -- I need no instruction at all.
NIXON: Always --
KISSINGER: And on the press, I'm in complete agreement with you.
NIXON: It's the enemy. . . . The press is the enemy. That's all.

I don't agree on the professors, naturally enough, but think Nixon's right about the news media being the enemy (now), though not for the reasons he thinks. It's what Jonathan Rosenbaum calls "the media-industrial complex," and the news media, by and large, are in total synch with the government and the military-industrial complex. They've mostly forgotten that their real job is, as Finley Peter Dunne put it, to "comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable."

I think it looks like Kissinger agrees with you. He's hesitating. Him being a professor and all. I wonder if that was meant as a swipe at Kissinger from Nixon?

Agree with you (and Rosenbaum) too Joseph on the media's role. One area where Chomsky is spot on too.
"The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it." Karl Marx

"He would, wouldn't he?" Mandy Rice-Davies. When asked in court whether she knew that Lord Astor had denied having sex with her.

“I think it would be a good idea” Ghandi, when asked about Western Civilisation.

I agree with him on professors too. Prof. McBride and a few others - very few - excepted of course.

Quote:I wonder if that was meant as a swipe at Kissinger from Nixon?

If this is a true and accurate quote, one could only imply that it was a swipe when Nixon at one time or another believed it was Kissinger, after all, who may have been the one leaking White House information to the press.

Professor Chomsky being another professor to handle with care....Good on media role. Not so good on conspiracy....

Kissinger made the famous comment, "The reason academic disputes are so acrimonious is that there's so little at stake."

Oliver Stone and Anthony Hopkins did a good job of capturing Nixon's sad sense of persecution in the film Nixon.

I really think that JFK and Nixon were the last two Presidents who tried to buck the Establishment and create their own policies - right or wrong - and both were destroyed for it.

I think Oliver Stone's NIXON is superb. It was amazing how most reviewers
and others missed that it's also about the JFK assassination. The director's
cut on DVD contains the added scene of Nixon confronting Helms (Sam
Waterston), which is critical to the film and that theme. Stone blends
some elements of Angleton (e.g., the orchids) into the Helms character.

That scene is brilliant, and it's good to have it back on the DVD. It's a little odd, because elsewhere in the film is stock footage of the real Richard Helms on TV.
