How Credible is the Markham Tape?
#1
The tape of the purported interview of Helen Markham by Mark Lane begins with a telephone operator announcing the called number as MA 7-6797. This MA 7 exchange did not belong to a telephone accessible by Markham.

I found this link to a page where MaBell lists the "Officially recommended Exchange names" http://ourwebhome.com/TENP/Recommended.html
It does NOT show MAtthew as an exchange anywhere... but that does not mean it was not used by operators.

I found another site that allows you to search Exchanges: http://rcrowe.brinkster.net/tensearch.aspx

There are TX phone numbers that begin with MA so I do not know that you can say definitively that Markham was not reached at a phone in Texas.
Plus she finally admits that is is indeed her on the tape...

Since there were no area codes at this time it is impossible to tell which state MA (62) would be as all states could have a MA (62) starting number.
A long distance call had to be accomplished with an operator as the transcirpts show http://history-matters.com/archive/jfk/w..._0296a.htm

Seems to me that MAyfield or MArket could easily reach Mrs Markham in TX somewhere... I have no idea what MAtthew might be.

The tape shows that Mark Lane called a long distance number. This means that the phone company would have kept a record of the calling number, the called number and duration of the call. This practice would have enabled the FBI to determine the name and address of the called party at MA 7-6797 provided that call actually took place.

I agree Herbert... don't you suppose if the number did not exist and someone was playing the part of Helen the FBI/CIA would have been thrilled to expose Lane?

Until anyone proves the number did not exist in TX, or where Helen was when she took the call the fact Helen says it's her on the tape should settle the issue.

Could the call have been MADE from that number... it is the operator who says it and then says "Long Distance calling"...
Possible?

Mark Lane placed a call to MA 7-6797 and was led to believe that he was speaking with Helen Markham who denied having spoke with Lane.

Warren Commission Testimony of Helen Markham on - March 26, 1964 - 3H, 317
Mr. BALL. Mrs. Markham, do you know a man named Mark Lane?
Mrs. MARKHAM. No; I do not.
Mr. BALL. Did you ever hear of the name?
Mrs. MARKHAM. Did not.
Mr. BALL. Did you ever talk to a New York lawyer who says he was from New York?
Mrs. MARKHAM. No, sir.
Mr. BALL. Did you ever talk to a lawyer who was investigating the case in behalf of the deceased man, Lee Oswald?
Mrs. MARKHAM. No, sir.
Mr. BALL. Did you ever talk to a man who said he was representing the mother of Lee Oswald?
Mrs. MARKHAM. No, sir.
Mr. BALL. You don't remember ever talking to a man named Mark Lane?
Mrs. MARKHAM. No, sir.

End of quotation.

Markham only said that the female on the tape sounded like her.
