Senator Mansfield was an early supporter of Ngo Dinh Diem, Mansfield had a change of heart on the Vietnam issue after a visit to Vietnam in 1962. He reported to President Kennedy on December 2, 1962, that US money given to Diem's government was being squandered and that the US should avoid further involvement in Vietnam. It was this report that led to months of talks that began within Kennedy's administration to move the Diem brothers out of Vietnam, eleven months later a coup would take place both in Vietnam and Dallas.

If you read Newman's masterful book, you will see that what Mansfield's report did was to convince Kennedy that the boost in advisors did not work. Therefore, nothing short of direct American intervention would help, which is what people like Halberstam and Jean Paul Vann wanted. But which Kennedy was not going to do. In fact, Mansfield later said that Kennedy told him in confidence after his report was submitted, that he was going to begin a withdrawal program within the year. (Newman, p. 324)

What you are talking about, the attempt to remove Diem, that was actually traced to the Battle of Ap Bac. Which happened in January of 1963. Military advisor Jean Paul Vann was involved in this, and State Department officers Hilsman and Forrestal were in country when it happened. (Newman, pgs. 302-05) That battle was important since the the ARVN had every single advantage over the Viet Cong. But they still lost, and it was not really close. This convinced Vann that the only way Saigon could win was with American combat troops. It convinced Forrestal and Hilsman that Diem was not the man to win the war. And that was reinforced by the outbreak of the Buddhist crisis in Hue in April of 1963. (ibid, p.332)

So who is posting under Scott's account here? Is it Scott Kaiser who could not grasp that Jim DiEugenio was referring to what distinguished author David Kaiser wrote in his book until DiEugenio pointed out the obvious to Scott, more than a day after Scott went off on Jim in confused frustration?

Or is it the Scott Kaiser who could not read and understand the bolded highlight in my recent post here, ("from my stay THERE) and went off on me in confused frustration.....?

Or is it the Scott Kaiser who conceded with no apology or class, after I posted an image of the text of a cable sent by JK Galbraith, describing what I had already highlighted.....Galbraith had stay(ed) there..... he had been in Saigon and was reporting what he learned to President Kennedy?

Or is the entity posting the last few comments a surrogate with an emotional investment or more, in Scott Kaiser's book. It seems obvious it is not Scott himself, communicating to Jim or I in the last few posts, and it is obvious someone different was typing in the words since Scott Kaiser posted this, in his inimical manner.:

Please introduce yourself and describe your stake in the Kaiser's book and your preference for-

....minute meetings or FOIA documents that can explain everything a little more clearer.

Galbraith did write a letter or two, I'm not contending or disputing that, however, Kennedy did not, and I repeat myself for the sake of history. The President did NOT send Galbraith to Vietnam for any report.
