JERUSALEM Israel's defense minister announced his resignation on Friday, saying the governing party had been taken over by "extremist and dangerous elements" and that he no longer trusted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following reports that he was to be replaced.
Moshe Yaalon's departure removes a strong voice of moderation in the Cabinet and deepens the rift between the security establishment and the hardline politicians.
Reports over the past few days indicate that Netanyahu intends to appoint former foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman to the post of defense minister.

So, first we have the discussion to declassify the 28 pages, and then the threatened blackmail from the Saudis. Then we have the story that King Saud backed, in a big way, Netanyahu's re-election, then the US Senate passes this bill unanimously, then the Israeli defense minister quits and calls Netanyahu "extremist" and "dangerous".
Why am I suddenly getting the impression that the US is actually trying not merely to reopen old wounds, but to prevent or forestall some future act involving the collaboration of the House of Saud and the House of Netanyahu?

Lieberman is a 'hawk's hawk'...one of the most reactionary and far-right men in Israel. Israel seems to move ever further and quicker to the right...a pattern all to common in many countries now.

Lieberman's a traditional nutter - old school; Israel's a far-right, ultra-nationalist, gods-own-ppl mindset, but that's gotta sit awkwardly with those liberal, rainbow kibbutzniks - that 'artisan' variety, not gun-toting "god told me to skin you alive"-variety settlers. Seems to me that there's quite the schism in Israeli society-mindset, traditional ingredients for civil war. Thank gawd for the Refusniks & Max Blumenthal/Norman Finkelstein etc etc. I gather Bernie Sanders bows-out of the conversation, but then, he seems charmingly 'ordinary' - 'just this guy'.
