I don't 'do' facebook ['cause it is run by the NSA, DARPA, etc.], so don't know. I developed a relationship with Marina at sometime inthe past, and we exchanged several letters- often NOT on anything to do with Lee or Dallas; and when I had the FIRST permit ever for a 'parade permit' plus permission to set-up a loud-speakers for an event in DP, she gave me a statement to read on her behalf. I like her as a person - much. I know she has not always told the full truth - or has been coerced into not doing so. She was a low-level [sleeper] intelligence asset of the USSR, IMO, to watch Lee [a low-level intelligence asset of the USA, IMO]. But, as a person - now - she has learned (and been often burned! ) - and in the process grown in stature and character GREATLY the 'hard' way. I regard her as a friend, a good human being, who was used [as was her faux husband Lee] - and one who has not told the full story which she knows first hand - upon which I do not pass judgement...the 'enemy of the truth' is very dangerous and I'm sure there are still parts of the puzzle even she can't piece together. One special exchange between her and I was on the works of Bertold Brecht - nothing more. She is no 'dummy'! Very intelligent, moral [IMO], and she knows which side the intelligence and reality 'bread' is 'buttered' upon........

"Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience! People are obedient in the face of poverty, starvation, stupidity, war, and cruelty. Our problem is that grand thieves are running the country. That's our problem!" - Howard Zinn

I'm still wondering if that's really Marina on it though.

I struggle with whether or not to use FB given that it's a NSA/DARPA tool. I'd be interested in input on the subject, particularly from those who are aware of the real nature of FB yet chose to be active on it. There are a few DPF members who fall into that category.

I guess I don't understand what's so spooky about friends using a social network site on the web to reconnect Helen. I'm not quite sure what you're suggesting.

Can you please expand on that?

Myra, I am aware and I choose to be active on it.

The Public Sphere has now been privatized. Should we therefor boycott it, and consign it to a privatized grave? In doing so, we may be helping fascism.

That is why i type on facebook. I type things that I believe should be in the public realm. I dont take quizes and yet I know there is probably psych profiles gleaned from what I type. You just have to keep that in mind, and maybe throw them and or yourself some chin music now and then, or maybe a knuckler. In the end it is about the question of whether or not a public sphere can ever be pieced together again. In many ways I post there for the same reason I believe in Peters efforts to keep a portal open in the other forum re 9/11.

The public sphere is now patchwork. People should think hard pros and cons wise before deciding to abandon a patch. Sure the negatives of the patch might be most obvious at first. But switching to another medium could result in marginalization in a way not thought of by the citizen on retreat.

Thanks Nathaniel. The input is valuable. This is a decision many people need to make, so it helps to deliberate about the pros and cons of being (as [size=12]Carsten puts it) overt.

Interesting topic. I just terminated a Face Book account because it seemed fairly obvious -- having read what I've read -- that I didn't need a public profile there (or at Twitter either). And the whole online social thing at FaceBook seems mildly creepy, and shallow; I've never had any substantive interaction at FB, and I've never tweeted.

Both -- and similar things -- can be useful in some ways but I have reservations, limited time, presumably some focus, etc. (That's not a comment on those who choose to play there... ) But I personally would rather tend toward deeper engagement, greater personal investment in the relationship; soon I hope to do a piece on anomie, ma-ai, and disconnection. And then there is the quote from Thoreau about the year that they built a telegraph between Texas and Maine; this, he said, presumes Texas has something to say to Maine.

I just read a column by K. C. Cole in her book "Mind Over Matter: Conversations with the Cosmos" that asks the question "Are you a boson or a fermion?".

"Bosons don't know the meaning of enough"; they can clump together without limit. squeezing into the smallest space. There is always more room for bosons."

"Notoriously standoffish. fermions are loners; only one can occupy the same space at a time."

She in some sense equates bosons with love; the title of the piece is "Love and Bosons". I disagree with that equation; Thoreau and others who were loners had a love affair with nature and the world; there is more than one reference to the eros of wilderness. I suspect many of us can relate to that as a motivation for our interest in deep politics. But the last of her column says:

"The more we get to know particles and people, the more we learn about intricate past histories. hidden entanglements, unexpected complications. What seems understood and simple in one moment can change in an instant into something strange and complex. Love is like that. So are bosons."

We watch the security apparatchniks who watch us.

Myra,
She recently friended me and as I accepted I sent her a private message asking some questions that only the real Marina would know the answers to.
I have not gotten a reply so this tells me it's not her. Therefore I plan to "defriend" her". I have heard of peple having their accounts deleted by fb but have yet to see a reason why. I post political articles that I see on other friend's pages regularily. (Just hit "share" and it goes to your profile). I use fb a little for social networking but mainly for politcal purposes. There is lots of conspiracy stuff. I am aware that it it is run by NSA or the like but my attitude is that we who know certain truths must seek each other out and spread the truth and seek to gain more on our side. For this reason I also have no problem using my real name, be it there, here or on any forum. I wear the term "conspiracy theorist", or as I call it "conspiracy truther", as a badge of honor. I refuse to self-censor. When we live that way then "they" have totally won.
