When one 'quotes' previous posts
#1
On other Forums when one hits 'quote' it copies ALL material in the post - INCLUDING previous quotes they may have included. I like this option. On our Forum, one one 'gets' the new, original material of the LAST post. Can this be changed?!

Hi Peter - when we were setting up DPF, one of the things that annoyed many of us was the presence on other forums of posts which consist of a huge chunk of previously posted material and about one line of new material. There seemed to be whole pages one trawled through to find a solitary new thought, and this might even be as tedious as "I agree" or an emoticon.

My own practice is generally not to quote existing material, particularly if it's on the same thread page. However, when it is important to include the comments that I'm replying to, I'll try to select the relevant part.

My opinion is that if someone wants to read the original material, it is better for them to go back in the thread, rather than to clutter up the thread with the same material endlessly recycled.

This is of course a matter of personal preference.

We can into that Peter. It is odd that vBulletin doesn't automatically nest quotes.

Try it now Peter.

You can see what the nested posts should look like at a this test thread:

It's set to a maximum of 4 nests. If more is needed just say so.

To One and All:

Jan speaks to one of my pet peeves (small furry rodents with sharp teeth).

As is the case on all websites, ours comes with finite bandwidth. There is no need whatsoever to replicate lengthy posts in their entirety when referencing component parts therein.

Either direct readers to the post(s) under consideration (by thread and post #), or extricate those passages of direct relevance to your commentary.

If nothing else, think of this suggested methodology as a courtesy to readers -- and as an effort to cull the peeve, an all too unendangered species.

Oh my gosh! This is also one of my main pet peeves, especially at Simkins forum. Some will bring down a very long ass post and you scroll down and down and then get so aggravated to find only one sentence or a short paragraph added. Some will also bring down an entire thread from above them and each new poster will do the same. Eventually it is so hard to tell who posted what or sometimes to even find the new post. Somewtimes I might c&p one sentence from above, to what I am actually replying to, but no more then just that. However, it is good sometimes to be able to scroll down under what you are currently writing, to refresh your mind about what someone had exactly posted.

Points taken, but while I agree we should all try to economic with our use of quoting past material, I find most don't read a thread, but the last post and having some of what was being responded to helps to orient and understand. I think a 'middle-passage' is best. ToiletToiletToilet

'comeon, techies, have the computer computer the lines/post quoted and set a limit - or 'old style' send 'friendly' 'reminders' to multiple offenders. When a post is really good, there is the temptation and reason to quote at least the best bits, methinks....yes, sometimes people quote the whole thing and it can be long - everyone think of the poor Administrators and we don't want to have to have advertising, like on some Forums 'we know'!:pepsi::pepsi::pepsi:
