The irony of this is shown in The Unspeakable where Douglass makes it clear if it wasn't for the influence of monk Thomas Merton, as well as the brilliant intervention of the Pope, aggressive military advisors may have succeeded in a pre-emptive nuclear war. So, while some were biased against a Catholic in the White House, in truth it may have saved their posteriors from being fried in an insane nuclear interchange. Instead, those aggressors settled on the Viet Nam War as their black reward.
