'Mastermind' is more beneficial for those with less research because it brings them up to speed on Johnson's treachery. However it does so at the cost of presenting an incorrect version of Johnson's role. The way I see Nelson is he's a huckster who needed a hook so he pushed the mastermind theory in order to gain sales. You get some people whose pet angle is mafia, Johnson, Cubans etc and they push it to the hilt. Then you have the opposite from the factualist camp where researchers go after real events and deny their veracity and significance.
