Joseph McBride Wrote:San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown was warned the night before not to travel on 9/11. Little has come out
about that, although that cryptic story appeared in the press at the time.
About a decade ago I found myself standing in line at Tommy's Joynt on Van Ness Ave right behind a short, well-dressed, older black guy.
"Is that Willie Brown?" I wondered for a minute before the guy pulled out a cell phone and answered. "Hello?"
Distinctive voice. It was Willie Brown, all right.
When we got up to the hof brau counter I made some innocuous comment about how good the salmon looked, and Brown emphatically agreed.
I waited until we'd both ordered, then said: "Mayor Brown, it's been reported that you received prior notice not to fly commercial airlines on Nine Eleven, what was up with that?"
"No, no, we'd get the usual terrorist alerts all mayors received. I don't know where that came from."
"The Matier and Ross Report in the Chronicle."
"No, no," he said without a trace of irritation.
At that point the guy at the cash register asked Brown if he were paying for my lunch.
Brown picked up his tray and said as he walked away -- "No, I'm not running for anything!"
Everyone in ear shot laughed.
Me too. Charming dude, Willie Brown.
