It's time to explore some basic concepts, such as what is meant by Manchurian Candidate.

John is entirely correct that the first and original usage - to my knowledge - is by Richard Condon. I suspect that John is also correct in that Condon's primary meaning is of a constructed Presidential candidate, a "sleeper" programmed by a foreign power, in this instance in Manchuria.

John - do you further interpret this to suggest the creation of a White Russian Fuhrer who may not himself be programmed?

Well not the creation, per se, but the reality. I think that Anastase Vonsiatsky was chosen by consensus as the "Candidate" (from Manchuria) of the White Russian emigres to help them recover their lost homeland, mother Russia.

By the same token Condon probably meant that Vonsiatsky bragged about his communications from Ribbentrop, Geobels, von Ludendroff and others where Vonsiatsky stated that he was the Nazis chosen "Candidate" as the proposed new Russian Czar or premiere of a conquered and Fascist occupied Russian state. Again he was from Manchuria where his headquarters were and he used the Pavlovian and maybe some Chinese tricks to program his "assassins" and "saboteurs" which he admitted sending back into communist occupied Russia on suicide assassination missions. To go on patently obvious suicide missions is evidence of having been programmed. Like the Palestinian suicide bombers or what I think was exactly like the 9/11 Kamikaze-styled and Kamikaze-trained pilots in 2001.

So Vonsiatsky was THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE or Canditatus for two groups: White Russian Czarist emigres and for the Nazi leadership and their Gestapo. Remember that I discovered 2 manuscripts by Dietrich von Eckart in the Providence College Vonsiatsky collection hidden in the deep recesses of some library. Vonsiatsky communicated with the highest levels of the Nazi leadership and then boasted about that to his neighbors in Putnam/Thompson while either rip roaring drunk or while playing golf or while playing God. But he was for real.

Meanwhile, it should be noted that John Marks' usage is somewhat different. Marks is talking about the search of intelligence agencies to create a "sleeper" or programmed agent in general. The programme implanted in that agent need not be that they are to be "a Presidential candidate". The programme could be a top secret message hidden behind hypnotic triggers - the "hypnotic courier" spoken of by Prof Estabrooks and created perhaps as early as WW1 and operational by WW2 - or, in ultimate usage, a programmed assassin. When Oswald is described as a "Manchurian Candidate", the meaning is that he was a programmed assassin, or programmed patsy, with a mission to kill or shoot at the American President; not that he was programmed to be a Presidential candidate.

I should state that whilst Marks' book is invaluable, and was pioneering in its exposure of MK-ULTRA, subsequent revelations show that the claim that the projects failed are entirely wrong and represent an attempt at cover-up and limited hangout by Gottlieb and other protagonists. Gottlieb famously burnt as much documentation as he could find, but forgot about several boxes of receipts.

In addition, much of the testimony in front of the Congressional Committee was couched in terms limited to MK-ULTRA, when there were many such projects in place, not all run by the CIA (eg ONI, Military Intelligence, British Intelligence), and it is clear that much of the work was deliberately sub-contracted in such a way as it to create plausible deniability. Note that Cameron's experiments took place in Canada. In addition, inherently "weird" and thus deniable fronts were used, such as cults.

Colin Ross MD, a former President of the International Society for the Study of Dissociation, has undertaken much important work into understanding the mechanisms which might be used to programme a person to perform a particular action. His original book, Bluebird, was updated and reissued in 2006 as The CIA Doctors.

Ross' own definition of Manchurian Candidate is as follows:

The known predecessor programmes to MK-ULTRA included BLUEBIRD and ARTICHOKE, and Ross found many documents which clearly reveal the ultimate intention of the projects. For instance:

A document entitled "Hypnotic Experimentation and Research, 10 February 1954", describes a simulation experiment of relevance to the creation of Manchurian Candidate assassins:

Miss (whited out) was then instructed (having previously expressed a fear of firearms in any fashion) that she would use every method at her disposal to awaken Miss (whited out) (now in a deep hypnotic sleep) and failing in this, she would pick up a pistol nearby and fire it at Miss (whited out). She was instructed that her rage would be so great that she would not hesitate to "kill" Miss (whited out) for failing to awaken. Miss (whited out) carried out these suggestions to the letter including firing the (unloaded pneumatic pistol) gun at (whited out) and then proceeding to fall into a deep sleep. After proper suggestions were made, both were awakened and expressed complete amnesia for the entire sequence. Miss (whited out) was again handed the gun, which she refused (in an awakened state) to pick up or accept from the operator. She expressed absolute denial that the foregoing sequence had happened.

In short, the phrase "Manchurian Candidate" has differing meanings. For clarity, from hereon in, I will endeavour to use the phrase "programmed assassin" or "programmed agent" in this thread when I am referring to a person who has been programmed as assassin, patsy or in some other fashion.

Captain Bennett Marco, Sergeant Raymond Shaw, and the rest of their infantry platoon are kidnapped during the Korean War in 1952. They are taken to Manchuria, and are brainwashed to believe that Sgt. Shaw saved their lives in combat — for which the Army awards him the Medal of Honor.
Years after the war, Marco, now back in the United States working as an intelligence officer, begins suffering the recurring nightmare of Raymond Shaw murdering two of his comrades, all clinically observed by Chinese and Russian intelligence officials. When Marco learns that another soldier from the platoon also has been suffering the same nightmare, he sets to uncovering the mystery and its meaning.
In the visible, surface text of the novel, is revealed that the Communists have been using Raymond Shaw as a sleeper agent, a guiltless assassin subconsciously activated by seeing the “Queen of Diamonds” playing card while playing solitaire. As such, he obeys orders, which he then forgets. Raymond Shaw’s Soviet secret service controller is his domineering mother, Eleanor, a ruthless power broker working with the Communists to execute a "palace coup d’état" and quietly overthrow the U.S. Government with the "Manchurian Candidate": her husband, McCarthy-esque Senator Johnny Iselin.
However, in the sub-rosa text of the novel and the original movie, it is really revealed that the Fascists have been using Raymond Shaw as a sleeper agent, a guiltless assassin subconsciously activated by seeing the “Queen of Diamonds” playing card while playing solitaire, instead of the "Queen of Hearts" card which is a reference from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland Through the Looking Glass ("Off with his head.", said the Queen of Hearts). That card was the programmed MK/ULTRA symbol for Terminate with Prejudice or "off with his head." After seeing the Queen of Diamonds, Shaw obeys both literal and figurative orders in the movie including: "Why don't you go jump in the lake, buddy?", After completing these triggered commands, he then forgets them immediately. Raymond Shaw’s Gestapo BND secret service controller is his domineering mother, Eleanor, when in fact Lee Harvey Oswald was really controlled by George de Mohrenschilt, a Nazi intelligence agent according to several others including his own wife after his death. Shaw's wife is a ruthless power broker working with these Nazi-sympathizers to execute a "palace coup d’état" and quietly (or violently) overthrow the U.S. Government with the "Manchurian Candidate": her husband, McCarthy-esque and MacArthur-esque Senator Johnny Yerkes Iselin, a perfect anagram for "John E. is Rey S. Kline" (check it for yourself) which transposes into: "Johnny ("Johnny Iselin") is Ray S. Cline" who was a highly placed officer within both the Office of the Directorate of the CIA and the President of The World Anti-Communist League during it's most blatantly pro-Fascist era when it was led by the Brit, Roger Pearson who was also a major recipient of funding from Wickliffe Draper's Pioneer Fund and a British Eugenicist and Racialist as well. The 1961 cinematic version shows two Gen. Douglas MacArthur oil portraits displayed at distinct times, the presidential candidate in Madison Square Garden is named Benjamin K. Arthur as in "MacArthur." MacArthur's father was named Arthur MacArthur, Jr. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_MacArthur,_Jr. and his father-in-law was named Benjamin. Instead of shooting Benjamin K. "Mac" Arthur, Raymond turns his gun on Senator "Johnny" Iselin whom he was supposed to just wound in the shoulder in order to elicit sympathy ostensibly after killing Benjamin K. Arthur. He then shoots his mother, too, square in the forehead. The novel has no portraits of MacArthur or other references to him at all, of course, and no references to either Abraham Lincoln or his assassination, like the 1961 cinematic version does. Linocln is referenced first in a slow pan onto a bronze Lincoln bust on a table, and then later when Senator Iselin dresses up like Abraham Lincoln at a costume party.
The original movie had both of these aspects created and then inserted into the movie most likely at the behest of Frank Sinatra and John Frankenheimer who obviously spoke with Richard Condon during the making of this film and added his "suggested exaggerations for effect." Ray S. Cline was the real handler for both Lee Harvey Oswald and for Robert Emmett Johnson who has been identified as a probable or positive "JFK sniper" by both Bill Turner (See: "The Fish is Red" - c. 1970), James Richards on the Spartacus Eduction Forum, Roy Hargraves during an interview with Mary Ferrell before he died, and by John Bevilaqua on the Deep Politics Forum. Cline inherited the covert intelligence operations of Col. Uliuss L. Amoss, O.S.S. and Major Carleton ("Indiana Jones") Coon, O.S.S. a Draper Eugenicist, an Egyptologist and an Anthropology Professor whose pistol was used to murder Admiral Darlan. The Amoss and Coon operation involved the use of programmed assassins, saboteurs, deep-cover agents placed in foreign countries and similar tactics and techniques. This concept of the creation of a privately funded international intelligence gathering agency was invented even before World War I by William Nelson Cromwell, OSJ the founding partner of Sullivan and Cromwell and since World War II under William "Wild Bill" Donovan, OSJ, then later under Allen Dulles who worked for Cromwell at Sullivan and Cromwell. William Nelson Cromwell, OSJ is credited with being the inventor of the concept of Regime Change in about 1900 in his own Wikipedia article. Cromwell was also the person credited with turning the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem (OSJ) into an "international intelligence gathering agency" in the early part of the 20th Century according to references posted there. Cromwell was the first Grand Prior of OSJ in the 20th Century and he set the tone for the balance of that century for the OSJ operatives. His stated goal and that of the Shickshinny Knights of Malta was to defend and protect the Catholic Church from all infidels, heathens and interlopers. And when JFK would not join them with sufficient dedication on their Holy Crusade against Communism, JFK was targeted for termination with prejudice by the likes of William "Wild Bill" Donovan, OSS, OSJ, William Grace, OSJ and William F. Buckley, Jr. who was a rabidly religious, right wing extremist, the founder of Young Americans for Freedom, and a Carlist Catholic plus a member of the CIA. His protege, E. Howard Hunt, Jr. in a deathbed declaration admitted his role and that of some rogue CIA officers in the assassination of JFK. See: http://www.SaintJohnHunt.com Hunt was a classmate of both Anastase Vonsiatsky and George Lincoln Rockwell at Brown University in the early 1940's and was cut from the same xenophobic cloth as both Buckley, Vonsiatsky and Rockwell. There is a developing, but still circumstantial body of evidence indicating that Hunt's choice of the first name of his son, "Saint John" Hunt also known as "Saint" was inspired by E. Howard Hunt's association with members of THE SOVEREIGN ORDER OF SAINT JOHN OF JERUSALEM at the time of the birth of his son. It is also possible that Hunt had an unofficial and unpublicized designation as a Knight of the Order of St. John, as well. Certainly E. Howard Hunt was on some sort of anti-Communist, anti-Immigrant and pro-Eugenics Crusade for most of his life as a dedicated xenophobe, racialist and eugenicist which he must have learned from both the Godfather to his children, including Saint John, William F. Buckley, Jr. and from his classmate, Anastase Vonisatsky.
Buckley was also cited by Richard Condon in The Manchurian Candidate novel as: "That fascinating young man who wrote about man and God at Yale." Buckly published "God and Man at Yale" in about 1952 for Henry Regnery Press and later worked for Clendenin J. Ryan at The American Mercury in Baltimore, MD with Brent Bozell, his future brother in law.
Clendenin J. Ryan was both the financial angel sponsoring Uliuss L. Amoss and Carleton S. Coon at ISI involved with mind controlled assassinations and the owner of The American Mercury where George Licoln Rockwell worked as an artist when Buckley was there. Ryan's son, Clendenin J. Ryan, Jr., was identified as the Georgetown roommate of Doug Caddy by Caddy himself, who a co-founder of Buckley's Young Americans for Freedom along with Marvin Liebman, of The China Lobby lobbying group started by Robert J. Morris, yet another frequently cited Richard Condon character in The Manchurian Candidate. Clendenin's grandfather Robert "Railroad" Ryan, it was just recently discovered supplied Adolph Hitler with most of the industrial diamonds needed to run his war machines using a Belgian diamond mining operation located in South Africa.





THE CODE OF THE SOVEREIGN ORDER OF SAINT JOHN OF JERUSALEM

Even the "Lee Harvey" Oswald character Raymond Shaw, was played by Lawrence Harvey the actor, whom Frankenheimer referred to as "Lee Harvey", the common version of his given name during a 1961 interview about the movie with Frank Sinatra. (Either very, very odd and coincidental or maybe the plotters picked "Lee Harvey" out of several alternative trained killers and patsies because of this coincidence.) Lee Harvey Oswald had undergone intensive MKULTRA training under the real Ray S. Cline while his unit was stationed in Ping Tung, Taiwan for a 30-45 day period when Cline was stationed there with the CIA and living in his "Pink Palace" on a hill. Ray Cline and John Singlaub, later head of the World Anti-Communist League, had headed up the O.S.S. offices in Mukden, Manchuria, China shortly after World War II which was in close proximity to the headquarters of Anastase Vonsiatsky where he and George deMohrenschildt plus 100,000 other exiled White Russians were living out their diapora. See: "The Russian Fascists" by Prof. John J. Stephan at that time a Professor at the University of Hawaii. (Little, Brown - 1979). Vonsiatsky's headquarters were in Harbin, Manchuoko, Manchuria during the Japanese occupation in the 1930's and the 1940's. Vonsiatsky had designed and then executed training programs for programmed assassins, saboteurs and commandos as well as for the Japanese Kamikaze pilots as part of their desperation attempts to turn the tide of the war. Vonsiatsky was also involved with the Section 731 bacteriological warfare and vivisection experiments operated by the Japanese on unwilling POWs and Chinese citizens which were ongoing in Harbin as well during the later stages of World War II. They were obviously trying to determine the most effective and efficient bacteriological agent to release on allied troops. Maj. Gen. Charles A. Willoughby confiscated all of these records and some human detritus produced as a result of these experiments, when he visited Harbin right after the war. It was at this point that he became familiar with the work of Anastase Vonsiatsky in Harbin as well whom he apparently later befriended and recruited into his Shickshinny Knights of Malta orbit of fiends and associates shortly after that.
Richard Condon was in fact the first person who was not part of the plot to know the intimate details of their assassination attempt on JFK in 1958 in California done by "The California Bombers" including Roy Hargraves, a South Florida Soldier of Fortune who was an advisor to Oliver Stone on the movie: JFK. Condon even included a reference to Dr. Revilo P. Oliver, a founder of the John Birch Society, in his novel. Oliver, yet another Draper Eugenicist, later appeared as a Warren Commission interviewee 5 years AFTER the novel was published.
Richard Condon in The Manchurian Candidate was attempting to warn everyone about the plans of these John Birchers, rougue CIA agents involved in Mind Control programs, members of the German BND and some of the Grand Priors like William S. Cromwell and protege Allen W. Dulles, or other members of The Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem and the Knights of Malta like William J. Donovan, OSJ, William Grace, OSJ of The Grace Lines, and Patrick J. Frawley, Jr., OSJ. Patrick J. Frawley hired Robert J. Morris to work for him at both Technicolor and Schick Eversharp. Frawley also sponsored "mind control" research at INCA in New Orleans where Ricard Scannell Butler, the person who interviewd Oswald for the New Orleans radio station actually worked. INCA was started and run by the later head of The Council for National Policy, Alton Ochsner, Sr. who was born in Nicaragua. Joining Ochsner as CNP heads were Nelson Bunker Hunt, Tim LaHaye, Thomas Ellis, III, from The Pioneer Fund, Edwin Meese, III, Pat Robertson and serveral others.
Condon even referenced Anastase Vonsiatsky a major entity in the Russian Orthodox Church a representative of the Czar who gave SKOM its credentials, and in Fascist intelligence circles like those in the orbit of George deMohrenschildt, his protege and direct charge. Condon used Vonsiatsky's distinct persona plus several anagrams, word plays and references to his idealistic Red Cross wife, Marion B. Ream, the daughter of Louis B. Ream who was a World War I era robber baron millionaire just like the Drapers and the owner of Baldwin Locomotive where Vonsiatsky was a strike busting thug. Ream made his fortune with various virtual monopolies like U.S. Steel, The National Biscuit Company (later Nabisco), Marshall Field and Company, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and by cornering the Chicago Mercantile Exchange pork markets.
