Peter and Magda,
Good work, you are on the right track. One thing, Schlachter as the Umbrella Man will run you in circles so may I suggest to follow the Nugan Hand trail. Just to add a degree of difficulty, it goes in reverse. This leads to Tom Clines and we know where he comes from and who his connections were.
This is very complicated but worth pursuing. I can not offer sources but this angle can potentially connect Nagell to Clarence Ward Bishop aka Col. William Bishop aka John Adrian O'Hare and this in turn connects to what Nagell may really have known and why he fired a revolver in a Texas bank.

Nope. You called him "Robert."
Which is my middle name, so I'm flattered.
Great post, by the by.

The name Bernie Houghton, his underworld connections and the Golden Triangle begins to emerge, I think.

David,
You are correct. Bernie Houghton was a CIA man who began the infamous 'Bourbon and Beefsteak Bar and Restaurant' in Kings Cross, Sydney's red light district.
From the Nugan Hand backwards, there is a lot of history to protect here including an Ed Wilson 'hit list' that included Waldo Dubberstein, Rafael Villaverde and Doug Schlachter. The first two were indeed killed.
Villaverde is one that goes back to the Brigade 2506 and a stint at Fort Benning.
Like I said, it gets complicated but a common thread does emerge.

I thought of him too. Definitely involved in Nugan Hand and other parts of the US secret black ops in South East Asia and probably other places too. Had for years and years the Bourbon and Beefsteak but wasn't always in the back office and used to leave the day to day running, interesting enough, to some one else.

Ah. A dim light possibly begins to dawn. Prior to the US involvement in Vietnam/Indochina, the French were active there and in particular French intelligence were beneficiaries of the Opium trade and this trade, in fact, completely financed their IndoChina activities. Then 1954 and enter the USA. The same deal was struck by Lansdale with the various opium clans and this eventually led to the so called “Long Silver Train” of dead soldiers in caskets who’s insides were eviscerated and replaced with No. 4 Chinese white heroin for shipment back to the USA, per William Colby then head of the CIA.
But a few years earlier than that, a pesky President decided to withdraw US forces from that theatre and with that he upset all sorts of people who had grown accustomed to a fat life courtesy of white powder - plus the industrial complex who were looking for a war to eat vast quantities of materiel to make them fat and happy too.
Is this a reasonable summation James, of the history that needed protecting?

Arturo Verdestein is apparently Arthur Greenstein, an individual that Nagell met at the Hotel Luma in Mexico City. Slowly, it comes clear. Dirty Dick = Richard Helms
David, I have no indication Wilson himself as involved, but many he worked with in his career certainly were - up to their eyeballs! He must know lots. He speaks not. Wants to live.
I'm working on this tentacle. One common name is Thomas Clines for general background. There are others - give me a day or two...gotta work, as well [damn!]

David,
First, it's great to have James with us.
Second, your analysis is confirmed, I'd suggest, by Henrik Kreuger in The Great Heroin Coup (among other histories), and long has been a cornerstone of my own reverse-engineering of the JFK plot.
The elimination of the Marseilles/Union Corse middlemen by the deep political nexus (Santos Trafficante's tour of the Golden Triangle figures prominently in the process) burned beyond reclamation the old network in the most public of manners (see Nixon's drug war charade). If Southeast Asia were not defended, the new global narcotics network would be mortally threatened. There was no time or opportunity for a third alternative.
(Hence the JFK assassination false sponsor patsying of the Guerini brothers and other French Connection principals, an operation that continues. See The Men Who Killed Kennedy.)
I do not argue, of course, for protection of international narcotics networks as the sole motive for the elimination of JFK.

I concur entirely Charlie. Not just narcotics but that was one of the keys I would think. Oil and arms corporations wanted a war, any war, to feed on.
But on the drugs angle Lucien "Lou two fingers" Conein and his mates in the Union Corse were Lansdale's key players.
In 1972 he joined the DEA. :thefinger:

David,
Correct on Conein and some of his Union Corse cronies.
Which tells me that they were playing double games with Guerini et al, and received their rewards.
An interesting footnote to history: Charles Sheldon Whitehouse, former US ambassador to Laos and Thailand in the 1970s and father of Rhode Island's current junior US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse -- the liberal lion ready to pounce on the Cheney-Bush beast -- officiated at Conein's wedding.
