"When pressed by Morrissey in recent correspondence, he merely retreated to saying that he refused to believe that his friends in the Academy of Arts and Sciences would lie (private correspondence)."
There it is. If I embrace the idea of a conspiracy, and believe that it actually matters, it might upset my lofty position and standing in my little social clique. I might not get invited to the good parties anymore, or be held in high esteem by my peers. Chomsky's worrying about preserving his credibility, tidying up his legacy, being taken seriously, etc.

It is truly a bizarre illogical rationalization [if it be that innocent]......when he spends most of his time speaking and writing on how the government lies...but when it comes to big things, Really Deep Things, 'it doesn't matter and his friends who he wines and dines with wouldn't lie to him?!::face.palm::
Marcus and Salandria actually got [after their first approaches long ago to Chomsky] to get him to express real interest in the events of Dallas. They gave him their best information, which he said seemed interesting, challenging and needed his further consideration [he read what they gave him].....then some weeks or months later he was forever locked into the 'box' he now is in on the subject. The keys to that box obviously thrown away. Sad, as on other matters he is 'right on the mark'....yet on this [Dallas] and 9-11 and a few others it is as if it were another person thinking and speaking.:
