Were bombers in the air over Dallas Nov 22, 1963?

I just talked to a very interesting man who said that there were bombers in the air over Dallas Nov 22, 1963. They were there in case the plan failed, presumably either the assassination or the cover story. According to this source they were prepared to bomb the city as a contingency.

Does anyone have any information on this, or an opinion on the credibility of the scenario? I firmly believe that there were many radical backup plans, I just don't know if this was one of them.

Myra: No there were no bombers on any matters pertaining to JFK going to bomb Dallas if the abort team was successful. I think I know where this story came from. Following is background:

Carswell Air Force Base is located in Fort Worth and sometimes the approach to that SAC base was over and near Dallas Love Field. (Dallas was sometimes used as a bombing training run for SAC B-36 and later the B-47 Strato Fortress out of Carswell) and you could see them circling high overhead as they made there practice bomb runs.

In 1963 the B-47 and the fairly new B-52 used the 'Oil Burner' route over Dallas on their training Bombing runs. One day in November, two days before the Dallas affair, one of the B-47's had an emergency (fire in the Bomb Bay) and requested to land at Dallas Love Field. One problem, it had an atomic bomb on board. The aircraft flew low over and around Dallas for over three hours to burn off fuel and put out the fire, before it was cleared to continue to Fort Worth. The aircraft was routed north from the metro city of Dallas and made its approach to Carswell from the N/E which was north of Metro Fort Worth.

Some people in Dallas remembered that event and quickly read it into the JFK assassination. It was many years after the JFK that the pilot Col. Joe Walker and co-pilot Capt Jess Murphy told an inquiry at Carswell about the emergency fire over Dallas, which had happen two days before the assassination. From there the rumors started.

Myra... In those years it happened a lot..... If you looked at the old CAB (before the FAA) tower logs (if you can find them) they would show hundreds of those types of emergencies through out a year..... as a young man we used to count the number of engines on the B-36 that were in full feather (not running) and would place bets if they were going to make it to Fort Worth. They all had atomic bombs on board... it was the Cold War and those bombers flew over every major city in the US and Europe. Because of the atomic weapons they could not land at just any little old airport... and too, in those days the runways could not support a full loaded bomber like a B-36 or a B-52. More than one bomber was nursed back to Carswell by flying directly over Dallas.

Tosh, that had to have been a different Joe Walker than the one flying X-15s at Edwards at the time, right?

Bruce; I really wouldn't know. There were a lot of Air Force people from WW11 pilots that went to Edwards from Sac at Carswell around that time. But I don't know if its the same Walker. Perhaps a little research in that direction could turn up something..., like base personal at Carswell and then those at Edwards during those years... might bring a match... ???
