I also harbour doubts about Greer and his organization - but primarily because I am personally convinced that the Flying Saucer/Alien hypothesis is a purposeful construct of the secret state.

In any event, there are a number of existing threads on the DPF that cover the UFO subject:

In the last thread there is a link to a free .pdf download of Nick Cook's book "The Hunt for Zero Point" that is essential reading on this subject.

I agree with the hypothesis David presents in his first paragraph above.

But nothing about such a condition would preclude the possibility of inter-planetary or inter-dimensional visitations. And the hypothesis does not explain persuasive historical UFO observations which pre-date the existence of ours or any other known secret state.

Of course one may postulate the existence of still hidden (subterranean, deep ocean) and perhaps ancient technological terrestrial civilizations capable of building and operating such craft.

David: I have the utmost respect for your Jungian scholarship. How do you assess Jung's "take" on UFOs?

By the way, I too endorse Cook's book. As I do the works of Jacques Vallee.

Charlie, he corresponded extensively with Donald Keyhoe, then the top dog of NICAP. With some caveating, he wrote about the subject in his book "Flying Saucers - A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Sky".

It's been a very long time since I read that, but as I recall he reserved judgement on their physical reality and set about analyzing them from the perspective of Analytical Psychology, hypothesizing that they were compensatory projections from the Collective Unconscious of the Self or Wholeness - primarily because the explosion of the first atomic bomb sent shudders through the psyche of mankind. For the first time man was able to annihilate himself. Splitting the atom was, according to my Analyst, equivalent to a Collective schizophrenia - a split personality.

As you know we both value Vallee's books, particularly Passport to Magonia. And we are both aware that the setting of Aleister Crowley's sketch of his inner master "Lam" is of considerable significance.
The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. This act is the essential condition for any kind of self-knowledge.

The "Lam" image does indeed track backward and forward in time toward a number of operations and manipultions of a distinctly terrestrial flavor.

I'm intrigued by the split atom/split personality comparison, and I'll study Jung's UFO volume closely.

It is my observation that reports of UFOs far predate the "secret state"
or "modern" technology. This does not rule out, however, that the
"secret state" does not adapt these themes for its own ends.

I am starting to read this book. It is quite persuasive. (I have been a complete disbeliever in UFOs.) Anybody read this? Also part of a disinformation campaign?

Lauren, if you haven't read it already, you may also want to read Nick Cook's book "The Hunt for Zero Point" which has a free pdf download linked on this forum.

My view is that anyone who wishes to fully understand this subject must be familiar with Cook's book. And as the Aviation Editor of the very prestigious Jane's Defence Weekly, his voice is not lightweight.

Charlie, I can't remember if Jung discusses the split atom = collective split personality directly in his UFO book. I am aware of it from discussions I had with my own Analyst who, in turn, was trained by Barbara Hannah, a very close friend of Jung.

Thanks for the recommendation. I have now finished it and am very impressed. I note that Cook refuses to say that his work explains UFOs. Even after reading Cook, I would still recommend Kean's book. I think these two books should be read in tandem.
