New book by former NY Times reporter to challenge investigation of JFK assassination

By Associated Press,

NEW YORK The ever-disputed investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy is getting a fresh look.
Former New York Times correspondent and best-selling author Philip Shenon has a book coming out this fall that alleges "powerful" people interfered with the Warren Commission's efforts to determine whether Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in shooting JFK in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.

Publisher Henry Holt and Co. announced Thursday it will release the currently untitled book on Oct. 22, a month before the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination.
Shenon has disagreed with government leaders and government reports before. His 2008 best-seller, "The Commission," strongly criticized the officials tasked with investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and portrayed members of President George W. Bush's administration as inept in their approach to fighting terrorism.

Well, that isn't quite right, is it? It is a true statement about the HSCA under Sprague and Tanenbaum, but to say that about the Warren Commission's "efforts" is rather laughable. Unless he means Dulles and McCloy interfered with themselves.

I wasn't that familiar with Shenon, so I read reviews of his 911 book on Amazon. He is part of the "official story basically right, Bush administration criminally incompetent" group. I wonder what his take on the JFK assassination will be. Wanna bet he will blame the Mafia?

Holt also published both Rush to Judgment (Lane) and Reasonable Doubt (Henry Hurt).

And maybe Hoover for covering it up.

And will peddle the essential myth that committees of inquiry, such as the Warren Commission, always act in good faith and are foiled by "rogue" elements.

On the seventh page of searches, all identical publisher's schmoosh, we find a blast from 1988 when Philip Gray told the Old Gray Hag this and that. . . .

For many students of the events of
Nov. 22, 1963, all that really seems
clear is their ignorance, They know
they may never understand exactly
what happened that day, or why.

So, now he calls "interference"--from positions of power--the joke's been made: Allen Dulles doing the Peter Sellers Dr. Strangelove wrestling with the black leather-gloved hand's attempt to Heil.

Just what Allen W. Strangelove wants for the 50th--more, "You've shown me nothing!"

We knew from Sylvia Meagher and Mark Lane decades ago one hundred times in their first chapters what Shenon presumes to bestow in the trumpeted "new book" (24,500 mostly identical returns in a gnat's eyeblink).

And the best recent work by far, Gerald McKnight, Breach of Trust: How the Warren Commission Failed the Nation and Why, 2005.

The year Guido Giacomo Preparata gave us Conjuring Hitler.

Fifty years on and on and on and Shenon.

I posit we know. And it's too much; it must be grayed out, washed like watercolor into a national boohoo over the tragedy.

A skinned knee is a tragedy.

The rape of a nation and a subcontinent is a crime against humanity.

Here endeth the extant rant.

I agree, Phil. It's a very solid piece of work. If I had to criticize it, it would only be in the sense that he tends to gloss over the Secret Service (which he generally sees as hamstrung by the FBI).
