Operation Gladio

Carsten Wiethoff Wrote:Jan,
"Der Spiegel" is actually not the worst on the Gladio issue. A quick keyword search finds a 12/2005 article on Gansers book (here, in German) and the Aldo Moro murder (here, in German) among around 10 others.

Also the history of Gehlen and the BND is not completely hidden. I easily found this Theme-Page on Gehlen: http://www.spiegel.de/thema/reinhard_gehlen/

But the Springer-Press and also TV is mostly silent on this and I would guess that 90% of the German populace never heard the word Gladio.

Carsten - thank you.

P3 featured in a book about Berlusconi and the Freemasons to be released this autumn: From P2 to P3: thirty years of politics and business.

Milan - A new book by Marco Marsili will be released this autumn, entitled From P2 to P3: thirty years’ of politics and business. The book discusses the history of P2 and its affiliates, these intertwined with services behind the state stragismo (fruit of the strategy of tensions East-West), the Red Brigade that kidnapped Aldo Moro, relations between business, politics, the Mafia, freemasonry, and the Vatican from “Only Plan” to the Borghese coup, the crack in Banco Ambrosiano, the death of Roberto Calvi, Michele Sindona, the band Magliana, Opus Dei, Tangentopoli, the Mitrokhin dossier, and subsequent events related to the characters of Licio Gelli’s secret lodge. Stories of a dark Italy intertwine, and often cross the path of Silvio Berlusconi and his allies.

Marco Marsili graduated with degrees in political science and international relations and communication and society with the highest ratings and praise. He is a journalist and professor of journalism and media at the University of Insubria in Varese.

Marsili’s book is due out in the fall from Sun City. The book is not another rehash of the P2 history and of its members, but seeks to trace how members of the secret lodge that Worshipful Master Licio Gelli called ‘the Establishment’ have survived the scandal of the year ‘ 80, how that have found employment, assistance and protection in the shadow of Silvio Berlusconi’s empire. Berlusconi made his way as an entrepreneur, first as a manufacturer, then as an editor, then a politician, ending up finally in control of almost everything - starting from the period of maximum expansion of Gelli’s lodge.

What is the connection of prime minister Silvio Berlusconi?

After early occasional work in his youth as a singer and entertainer on cruise ships with his friend Fedele Confalonieri, and door to door seller of electric brooms with his friend Guido May, Berlusconi began the task of estate agent, thanks to an anonymous patron – and a lot of money from mysterious Swiss financial trust with ties to Opus Dei and the Vatican.

The Knight, however, encountered many difficulties, until he finds P2, Sindona and Calvi, who launder money through the Bank of Cosa Nostra Rasin of Milan. The bank’s director general was the father of future prime minister.

In this whirlwind monetary tour are interwoven the stories of Paul Marcinkus, the IOR and the failure of Banco Ambrosiano after investments in offshore trusts, to the establishment of the first company by Berlusconi, San Martin Real Estate, administered by Marcello, who was embedded with the Mafia, managed the villa in Arcore purchased by Cesare Previti - old friends linked by common business and unspeakable secrets.

P2 was dissolved in 1981, and secret societies were prohibited by law the following year.

After the political storm that followed the discovery of the Castiglion Fibocchi lists, there was a sort of temporary purging of lodge members, facilitated by the desire of brethren to avoid the spotlight. Many … were overshadowed by more prominent positions, or stood aside and to come back some time later.

Despite the lodge’s dissolution, ruled by Law 25 January 1982, No 17, P2 is still active, at least many of its components. The lodge brothers who held public office disappeared from the limelight for some time in the limelight. Their reappearance coincided with the descent into the field of Berlusconi and the founding of Forza Italy, Berlusconi’s political party.

Meanwhile, they have been kept afloat by a network of solidarity reminiscent of Odessa, the secret organization founded after the Second World War to protect Nazis. Some found work with Mediaset (the director of Channel 5; Massimo Donelli, Maurizio Costanzo, Robert Gervasi, Fabrizio Gelli … the producer Angelo Rizzoli whose wife is Parliamentary PDL), others by Mondadori (Paul Moscow); others in positions of state or parastatal political appointment. Not all former members, of course, occupy prominent positions, but they have climbed the slope, aided by more fortunate “brothers.” Prosecutors investigating the Capitol on the intertwining of politics, mafia, businessmen and the judiciary, involving leading politicians, has dubbed the phenomenon “New P2.”

Those who have had a chance to preview the book describe the content as “highly explosive”. Who knows the contribution it will make to fueling political controversy in view of the forthcming legislative elections?

Sounds fascinating.

Here are some of the characters on Gelli's Propaganda Due (P2) list:

Quote:Licio Gelli's list found in 1981
On March 17, 1981, a list composed by Licio Gelli was found in his country house (Villa Wanda). The list should be contemplated with some caution, as it is considered to be a compilation of P2 members and the contents of Gelli's Rolodex. Many on the list were apparently never asked if they wanted to join P2, and it is not known to what extent the list includes members who were formally initiated into the lodge. Since 1981, some of those on the list have demonstrated their distance from P2 to the satisfaction of the Italian legal system.[21]

On May 21, 1981, the Italian government released the list.[22] The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry headed by Tina Anselmi considered the list reliable and genuine. It decided to publish the list in its concluding report, Relazione della Commissione parlamentare d’inchiesta sulla Loggia massonica P2.[23]

The list contains 962 names (including Gelli's). It has been claimed that at least a thousand names may still be secret, as the membership numbers begin with number 1,600, which suggests that the complete list has not yet been found.[7] The list included all of the heads of the secret services, 195 officers of the different armed forces (12 generals of the Carabinieri, 5 of the financial police Guardia di Finanza, 22 of the army, 4 of the air force and 8 admirals), as well as 44 members of parliament, 3 ministers and a secretary of a political party, leading magistrates, a few prefects and heads of police, bankers and businessmen, civil servants, journalists and broadcasters.[7] Also included were a top official of the Banca di Roma, Italy's third largest bank at the time, and a former director-general of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL), the country's largest.[11]

Some notable individuals include:

Silvio Berlusconi, businessman, founder of the Forza Italia political party and Prime Minister of Italy.[24][25]
Michele Sindona, banker linked to the Mafia.[26]
Roberto Calvi, so-called "banker of God", allegedly killed by the Mafia.[26][27]
Umberto Ortolani, leading P2-member.[28]
Franco Di Bella, director of Corriere della Sera.[14][25] Di Bella had commissioned a long interview with Gelli, who openly talked of his plans for a "democratic renaissance" in Italy—including control over the media. The interview was carried out by the television talk show host Maurizio Costanzo, who would also be exposed as a member of P2.[15]
Angelo Rizzoli, owner of Corriere della Sera, today cinema producer.[25]
Bruno Tassan Din, general director of Corriere della Sera.[25]
General Vito Miceli, chief of the SIOS (Servizio Informazioni), Italian Army Intelligence's Service from 1969 and SID's head from October 18, 1970 to 1974. Arrested in 1975 on charges of "conspiracy against the state" concerning investigations about Rosa dei venti, a state-infiltrated group involved in the strategy of tension, he later became an Italian Social Movement (MSI) member.[29][30]
Federico Umberto D'Amato, leader of an intelligence cell (Ufficio affari riservati) in the Italian Minister of Interior, former chief of the police under Mussolini.[31][32]
Federico Carlos Barttfeld (Argentina), ambassador to Yugoslavia from 1991 to 1995,[5] under-secretary of state in Nestor Kirchner's government, relieved of his functions in 2003 following allegations of involvement in the Dirty War.[33]
Emilio Massera (Argentina), a member of the military junta led by Jorge Rafael Videla in Buenos Aires from 1976 to 1978.[5]
José López Rega (Argentina), Argentinian minister of Social Welfare in Perón's government, founder of the Argentine Anticommunist Alliance ("Triple A").[5]
General Giuseppe Santovito, head of the military intelligence service SISMI (1978-1981).[11][29]
Admiral Giovanni Torrisi, Chief of the General Staff of the Army.[11][29]
General Giulio Grassini, head of the intelligence service SISDE (1977-1981).[11][29]
General Pietro Musumeci, deputy director of Italy's military intelligence service, SISMI.[29]
General Franco Picchiotti.[29]
General Giovambattista Palumbo.[29]
General Raffaele Giudice, commander of the Guardia di Finanza (1974-1978).[29] Appointed by Giulio Andreotti, Giudice conspired with oil magnate Bruno Musselli and others in a lucrative tax fraud of as much as $2.2 billion.[11][34]
General Orazio Giannini, commander of the Guardia di Finanza (1980-1981).[29] On the day the list was discovered Giannini phoned the official in charge of the operation, and told him (according the official's testimony to the parliamentary commission): "You better know that you've found some lists. I'm in those lists – be careful, because so too are all the highest echelons (I understood 'of the state') ... Watch out, the Force will be overwhelmed by this."[7]
Carmine Pecorelli, a controversial journalist assassinated on March 20, 1979. He had drawn connections in a May 1978 article between Aldo Moro's kidnapping and Gladio.[35]
Maurizio Costanzo, popular television talk show host of Mediaset programmes (Mediaset is Berlusconi's commercial television empire).[15]
Pietro Longo, secretary of the Italian Democratic Socialist Party (PSDI).[36]
Fabrizio Cicchitto, member of the Italian Socialist Party, who later joined Berlusconi's centre-right party Forza Italia.[11]

Quote:According to Italian magistrate Felice Casson, the Turkish stay-behind forces are two-pronged: the military "Counter-Guerrilla", and the civilian "Ergenekon". An offshoot of the latter organization is currently the subject of a major investigation. Casson says Turkey is home to the most powerful branch of Operation Gladio.
The counter-guerrilla's existence was revealed by prime minister Bülent Ecevit in 1973.
Close relation between Hizb ut-Tahrir, Ergenekon exposed
by Mutlu Özay and Mustafa Turan

The investigations carried out in relation to the Ergenekon affair, involving the arrest of prominent figures, have been making the headlines in Turkey. New elements have shed light on this terrorist network’s ties not only with NATO secret structures (Gladio) but especially with another well-known central Asian organization serving the same strategic objectives, in this case under the cloak of "fight for the reinstatement of an Islamic Caliphate": the Hizb ut-Tahrir group. In an editorial of the Turkish daily Zaman, Mutlu Özay and Mustaja Turan put the pieces of the puzzle together.
[Hizb ut-Tahrir is an extremist group seeking to reinstate the Islamic caliphate; Hizb ut-Tahrir received orders from Israel]

News in Brief – Ergenekon
Voltaire Network, 21 November 2009

The Israeli Lobby appeals before the US Congress to stop the Ergenekon trial in Turkey
The investigation into the illegal network known as Ergenekon, which was plotting to overthrow the Erdogan Government and replace it by a pro-U.S. military dictatorship, revealed that this terrorist organisation was a remodeled version of the Turkish Gladio. However, Ergenekon didn’t receive orders only from NATO; it allegedly also maintained close ties with the Mossad through Rabbi Tuncay Guney.
It shouldn’t be surprising, therefore, that on 18 November 2009 a seminar was held at the U.S. Congress to deny the existence of Ergenekon, putting it down as a myth invented by the Erdogan Government to discredit Army Chief of Staff, General Mehmet Yaşar Büyükanıt, and the U.S.-friendly officers in his entourage, in the hope of imposing an Islamic state.
The participants stressed that the United States should intervene urgently to stop the trial, but should not do so openly since it would feed into the "conspiracy theories" purporting that NATO has set up a "Deep State" in Turkey which has manipulated or attempted to manipulate public institutions for decades.
The seminar was organised by the ARI Foundation, a low-profile think-tank bent on promoting relations between Washington and Ankara. Actually, ARI is a front for the Atlanticist-Israeli lobby. In accordance with Robert Strausz-Hupé’s policies, ARI is promoting a Tel-Aviv-Ankara axis under NATO auspices for the control of the Middle East.
The ARI Foundation was created in Washington in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks. For the past two years, it has published a political policy review, Turkish Policy Quarterly. It enjoys close ties with AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) and JINSA (Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs). Its chairman, Yurter Ozcan, is on WINEP’s payroll (Washington Institute for Near East Policy).
Antony Blinken, National Security Adviser to Vice President Joseph Biden, figures among ARI’s most active members.

Operation Cage: a case study in Israeli false flag tactics

http://www.deeppoliticsforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=23206#post23206

Top Turkish government and intelligence sources told WMR in Ankara and Istanbul that Turkish intelligence has obtained evidence that Israeli intelligence is squarely behind repeated Ergenekon “deep state” plots aimed at overthrowing the Turkish government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, including Operations Sledgehammer and Cage.
Israeli special operations personnel have also been discovered by Turkish intelligence providing support for Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) terrorist attacks aimed at Turkish army and navy personnel. Israeli forces, operating from northern Iraq, are believed to have provided support for a recent PKK attack on a Turkish army post near the town of Semdinli. Ironically, Turkish forces used an Israeli-supplied Heron unmanned aerial vehicle system to track down the PKK in Iraq and identify their Israeli support team.
Mossad support for the Cage Operation Action Plan, hatched within the ranks of the Turkish Naval Forces Command, is a textbook lesson in Mossad false flag operations around the world.
As reported by
Today’s Zaman, Cage plans were found on a CD last year in the office of retired Major Levent Bektas, who was linked to caches of buried weapons in Istanbul. Cage plans called for the assassination of non-Muslim figures in Turkey and then casting the blame on Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP). Cage was actually implemented by the assassinations of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, Catholic Father Andrea Santoro, and three Christian missionaries in Malatya. Behind these assassinations of gentiles was the hidden hand of the Jewish state’s intelligence service, Mossad, according to informed Turkish sources.
Cage also targeted school children. TNT was have to been placed in a submarine on display at the Rahmi M. Koc museum in Istanbul and detonated at the same time a group of school children were due to visit the site. According to
Today’s Zaman, Cage was divided into four parts: “Preparation,” “Raising Fear,” “Shaping Public Opinion,” and “Action.” The similarities between Cage and the well-documented Israeli pre- and post-involvement in the 9/11 attack on the United States are stark, particularly the “preparation” phase involving hundreds of Israeli “art students” and furniture movers who were, in reality, Mossad and Israeli Defense Force special operations personnel.
The “Action” phase included assassinations and kidnappings of major non-Muslim figures in Turkey, as well as the planting of bombs near non-Muslim targets and arson attacks on their homes and offices. The “Action” plan also called for placing propaganda in key media outlets, including pre-designated web sites, blaming the terrorist attacks on Erdogan’s AKP government.

Did NATO attempt to assassinate Turkish President Turgut Özal? (News in Brief)
29 September 2010, http://www.voltairenet.org/article167101.html
Ahmet Özal, son of former Turkish president Turgut Özal (1927-1993), registered a complaint against General Sabri Yirmibeşoğlu, former secretary-general of the National Security Council and Commander of the Special War Department.
M. Özal has accused General Yirmibeşoğlu of having conducted an assassination attempt, on 18 June 1988, on the life of his father who was Prime Minister at the time.
For many years, the rumor has circulated that President Özal did not die of a heart attack on 17 April 1993, but was assassinated by Gladio; that is to say, Turkish agents operating under NATO’s orders.
General Yirmibeşoğlu denied the accusation. However, in responding to the press, he acknowledged that his services had taken part in covert operations, including some grievous manipulations. He inadvertently confessed to having ordered the burning of a mosque in Cyprus, in 1974, to manipulate the Turkish Cypriots (mainly Muslim) and pit them against their Greek orthodox compatriots.
The retired general had already admitted that his services were implicated in the 6-7 September 1955 riots in Istanbul. His agents, acting under the authority of Gladio, perpetrated an attack against the museum dedicated to Mustafa Kemal in Thessalonica, Greece. The attack, perceived as a sacrilege, inflamed Turkish extremists who took it out on the Greek communities in Istanbul and Izmir. The progroms claimed 16 lives and left 32 people seriously injured; some 200 women were sexually assaulted.
President Turgut Özal advocated a eurasist foreign policy that foreshadowed the neo-ottoman policy currently in place. For fifty years the United Kingdom and the United States have used Gladio to systematically orchestrate false-flag attacks to set up their Greek and Turkish allies against each other in order to weaken them.

It's funny how we don't learn about Gladio and the Strategy of Tension in the classrooms. I recently bought the book "NATO's Secret Armies: Operation GLADIO and terrorism in Western Europe" and intend to study it more thoroughly than I have in the past.

I believe it's extremely relevant and important to learn as much about this as possible, especially today. It seems "they" have just flipped the script and changed the protagonist from the "Communist threat" to the "Islamist threat". :wheel:

Progressive Press have a book listed for future release by Richard Cottrell - GLADIO: NATO'S DAGGER AT THE HEART OF EUROPE. 400 pages, nice looking cover, and of unknown quality. (Progressive Press have their hearts in the right place and published Tarpley's SYNTHETIC TERROR but offer a mixed collection of conspiracy works). Link is here:

http://progressivepress.com/book-listing/gladio

I'm sure that the lessons of Gladio have remained in use for folks like Rumsfeld, the UK intelligence factions, and many others. I had a letter published on Gladio in the cult / mainstream film magazine VIDEO WATCHDOG a few months back after one of their reviewers discussed the Aldo Moro case without giving indication that he'd heard of what we all know. Progressive Press editor John Leonard did mention to me a few years back that there was a remarkable (and big) new book that had come out in Italy on the Gladio subject with a lot of new interviews and archival research shedding deeper light on the subject, and that he wished he could do a US version of it, but Cottrell's book isn't it.

"Disinformation Directed Against U.S.", File Number ZF010858W - written by the US Army

3/10/1970

"There may be times when HC (Host Country) governments show passivity or indecision in face of Communist or Communist-inspired subversion, and react with inadequate vigor to intelligence estimates transmitted by U.S. agencies. Such situations are particularly likely to arise when the insurgency seeks to achieve tactical advantage by temporarily refraining from violence, thus lulling HC authorities into a state of false security. In such cases, U.S. Army intelligence must have the means of launching special operations which will convince HC governments and public opinion of the reality of the insurgent danger and of the necessity of counteraction. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nu6VqFeWr9A&#t=4m07s

To this end, U.S. Army intelligence should seek to penetrate the insurgency by means of agents on special assignment, with the task of forming special action groups among the more radical elements of the insurgency. When the kind of situation envisaged above arises, these groups, acting under U.S. Army intelligence control, should be used to launch violent or non-violent actions according to the nature of the case. Such actions could include those described in FM 30-31 as characterizing Phases II and III of insurgency.

In cases where the infiltration of such agents into insurgent leadership has not been effectively implemented, it may help towards the achievement of the above ends to utilize ultra-leftist organizations."

"The absence of a direct and daunting external security threat is, of course a most obvious aspect of the difficulty in defining the future defense posture of the nation. The United States has long resisted maintaining a large standing military and the Cold War years could prove an aberration to that history. Extending this historical observation of small standing forces, it is clear that there is no adversary on the horizon even remotely approaching the military power of the former USSR. While we might conjure up nominal regional contingencies against Korea or Iraq as sensible planning scenarios for establishing the building blocks for force structure, it will prove difficult to sustain the current defense program over the long term without a real threat materializing to rally and coalesce public support."

Sword Play: Attacking Civilians to Justify "Greater Security"
by Chris Floyd
2/18/05

'You had to attack civilians, the people, women, children, innocent people, unknown people far removed from any political game. The reason was quite simple: to force ... the public to turn to the state to ask for greater security."

This was the essence of Operation Gladio, a decades-long covert campaign of terrorism and deceit directed by the intelligence services of the West -- against their own populations. Hundreds of innocent people were killed or maimed in terrorist attacks -- on train stations, supermarkets, cafes and offices -- which were then blamed on "leftist subversives" or other political opponents. The purpose, as stated above in sworn testimony by Gladio agent Vincenzo Vinciguerra, was to demonize designated enemies and frighten the public into supporting ever-increasing powers for government leaders -- and their elitist cronies.

...Perhaps it's just a coincidence. But the U.S. elite's history of directing and fomenting terrorist attacks against friendly populations is so extensive -- indeed, so ingrained and accepted -- that it calls into question the origin of every terrorist act that roils the world. With each fresh atrocity, we're forced to ask: Was it the work of "genuine" terrorists or a "black op" by intelligence agencies -- or both?

While not infallible, the ancient Latin question is still the best guide to penetrating the bloody murk of modern terrorism: Cui bono? Who benefits? Whose powers and policies are enhanced by the attack? For it is indisputable that the "strategy of tension" means power and profit for those who claim to possess the key to "security." And from the halls of the Kremlin to the banks of the Potomac, this cynical strategy is the ruling ideology of our times.
