Book Review of Robert Caro's THE PASSAGE OF POWER

I am about a hundred pages into it.

Does not look good. I really wonder, if all these people actually read the books they review.

I will say this, Caro is a skillful and supple writer who knows how to carry a narrative.

Jim, I didn't get this book yet. Can you tell me what Caro says about two things - does he mention the phone call LBJ made to J. Waddy Bullion either from Parkland or AF1? I read the article in the New Yorker and he doesn't mention this important phone call.

And, What does he say about the phone calls LBJ made from the Executive Office Building (EOB) from the time they got back from Texas (6pm) until 9 pm?

What I want to know is why does it took nearly nearly two hours to get from the EOB to his home the Elms? As I point out in my blog post The Tipping Point - they leave the EOB at a very specific time and arrive at the Elms at a very specific time - more than an hour and a half hours later - what happened in between?

Someone told me that Caro says they drove around Washington and picked up one or two people. Who were they?

When you get there, please take note if Caro mentions LBJ's phone call to JWBullion within an hour of the assassination, and what he did after leaving the EOB at 9PM that night and before he got home to the Elms at 11.

Anyone else who can answer these two questions, it would be appreciated.

He does not mention that phone call. Just like he does not mention the Crenshaw call either.

As per that night, he says that they drove around picking up three men for LBJ to take home with him: Moyers, Clifton, and Valenti.

And LBJ stayed up with them very late to map out the activities for the next day.

This is a really disappointing book so far. I am on about page 420.

He says three shots were fired in Dealey Plaza. And he puts the word conspiracy in quotation marks.

There is no way it justifies its length. And he spends page upon page describing things most people know about. Like five pages on the funeral parade. yet he spends only two pages on LBJ first meeting on Vietnam. Not even that really since some of those pages are back story. But yet, what he does write is incomplete and misleading. I shudder to think what he will say about appointing the Warren Commission.

Its also a dishonest book. He tries to imply that LBJ did not alter any of JFK's policies when he took over.

This will be a main focus of my book when it comes out. How within a year, LBJ altered JFK's foreign policy in several places--all for the worst.

So I will ream him on that in my review.

Its a bad book. The guy is MSM all the way.

I estimate there are about 125 pages worth reading in the book.
